Fish Taco Recipe

To start this fish taco recipe off right, gather up these ingredients:

  • Frozen Prepared Fish Sticks – I got mine from Trader Joes but you could use your favorite brand for this recipe as well.
  • Flour Tortillas – flour tortillas offer a nice soft texture in contrast to the crunchy exterior of the fish sticks.
  • Lettuce – a crisp and refreshing bite.
  • Avocado – creamy and gentle, sliced avocado works swimmingly with these fish tacos.

Fish Taco Sauce

A simple fish taco sauce finishes off these tacos and adds a ton of flavor. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Sour Cream – tangy creamy goodness.
  • Mayonaisse – this adds a ton of flavor. Please don’t use miracle whip here.
  • Taco Seasoning – store-bought or a homemade blend, either work.
  • Lime Juice – to give it a hint of tartness.

Fresh Salad

To give some variety in this fish taco recipe, I made a fresh salad to go along with it. Alternatively, you can also whip up a nice slaw for the same effect.

  • Black Beans – one can, rinsed and drained. If you rather use another type of bean here feel free.
  • Sweet Corn – one can, rinsed. The sweetness and crunch from the corn are a great addition to these tacos.
  • Tomatoes – diced. For its flavor and acidity.
  • Red Onion –  diced. For its raw bite!
  • Cilantro – chopped, to taste. If you don’t like cilantro don’t add it.
  • Lime Juice – more lime juice to keep everything fresh and lively.
  • Salt and Pepper – to taste.

saladHow to Make Fish Tacos

  1. So, this fish taco recipe starts with store-bought fish sticks. These were beer-battered halibut pieces from Trader Joes. Really tasty. Throw these into the oven to get crispy and golden.
  2. While the fish is cooking, stir up a little fish taco sauce. All this is, is equal parts mayo to sour cream with a little lime juice and taco seasoning. See? Easy peasy. Stir this together until smooth and set aside.
  3. Your fish should still be cooking, so you can stir up a little salad. All that is in here is a can of black beans, a can of corn, diced tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, more lime juice with a little salt and pepper. YUM.
  4. Also, grab some lettuce and tortillas. Now we can assemble 🙂 Place 1 piece of fish onto 1 tortilla and top with salad, fish taco sauce, lettuce, and avocado. Serve.

There is something about the combination of ingredients that is just delicious. This has become a family favorite. I use a frozen breaded cod that I buy at Sprouts.

The lime juice was removed from the sauce, right? Was that and intentional removal, and do you recall how much was in it?

This is a great recipe! I just used some haddock filets I had in the freezer, and the salsa and sauce were so easy and delicious! Really easy to adapt with whatever you have on hand! I will make this again!

thanks for this recipe. I have transformed into something that would fit my dietary needs. I made a flaxseed wrap (wheat belly version) and added leftover tilapia, veggies and spinach and used mayo instead of sauce.

Being a “newbie” to your site I have to say You and your recipes are amazing! We love Trader Joes and fish tacos and so many we make are just OK but these are the best! We are on no carb/low carb and this will be a couple times a week OR more for us! Sam’s Club also has an Atlantic white fish that is amazing and will try with those too! Thanks so much!

This recipe is genius. Thank you!!

I made it last week, and my husband loved it so much, he had me make it again tonight for his parents.

I used the Trident fish sticks from Costco, corn tortillas, plain yogurt instead of the sour cream and mayo for the sauce, and I didn’t have the cilantro or red onion for the salad nor the avocado, and it was all still fantastic.

Great, great recipe! We will make this many more times.

Despite being the easiest, these also stuck out to me as looking the yummiest out of the recipes I researched. I’ve tried fish tacos from scratch a few times and my hubby has liked them but me not so much. I like this recipe much more! Thank you! I didn’t do a pico. Just bought a bag of coleslaw, made some guacamole, and diced some tomatoes. Oh, and made your sauce. So good.

    1. Lauren

The coleslaw-guac thing is totally making me crave YOUR fish tacos now. I’ll have to make these again your way! Mmm…

The pico salad with the addition of corn and black beans was excellent. I have made pico for years with tomatoes, yellow onions, and cilantro…substituted the yellow onion with red and added the corn and black beans and it was great…thanks!

Just tried these tonight. Delish! My friend pan fries battered frozen fish, breaks it up and adds taco seasoning for a little kick. With your salad and sauce it was divine and so simple! Thanks for the great recipe.

Wanted to surprised my wife with dinner, and so I did, the tacos are delicious and the preparation was effortless. My wife and kids praised me for the great dinner time. I’m very thankful for this recipe. May God bless you.

Very yummy! Loved the fresh salsa (black bean and corn salad) with the lime. They turned out so good! I used the typical cabbage (with a little green onion and cilantro mixed in) instead of lettuce. That adds a little more crunch. We also used warmed up corn tortillas. We didn’t have any avacados ~ but sounds good too. Thanks for the recipe!
I picked yours because of your pictures! I was hungry looking at them!

This is how my boyfriend makes his fish tacos! (with storebought frozen fish sticks)…never fails! Though he doesn’t add so many veggies to his 😉 That ‘dressing’ sounds amazing too.

I am loving this short cut! I haven’t tried TJ’s fish sticks yet, but now you have me wanting to so I can make this easy weeknight meal!

Looks insanely easy and very delicious! I’m gonna have to check those fish sticks out the next time i’m at the joes.

  21. Valerie @ From Valerie's Kitchen

Easy or not, I have no idea how you are keeping up with all of this with a brand new baby in the house. These kinds of recipes are what get us through the week! Looks great 🙂

  22. Michelle

Yum! I’ve done something similar but dear ol’ TJ’s also has a Cilantro dressing that I’ve used instead of the sauce. Not necessarily as scratch-made but after chasing both kids, sometimes the bottle (dressing) is a necessity for me. : ) Can’t wait to try it with the sauce you use.

  25. Meagan @ Scarletta Bakes

Love this! It does take a village, and Trader Joe’s is definitely a part of that village! 🙂 These tacos look lovely and I especially love the avocados and that creamy sauce… YUM.

I never made fish tacos before, but I had fish sticks and soft tacos already so why not. They were super yummy! The best part was the taco sauce. My husband and I went crazy for it. I make the sauce just for a yummy chip dip!
