These Heart Cookies are such a cute and simple way to make Valentine’s treats for loved ones. I started out by using sugar cookie dough, rolled it out, cut out my hearts, and stamped away. Already have letter stamps you want to use? Great, just wash them before using them! If you don’t, here is a great Cookie Stamp Set from Amazon (less than $5!).

Main Ingredients Needed

You only need 6 ingredients to make these Heart Cookies, and I bet you already have them all too! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Sugar – this is used to sweeten the cookies.
  • Cold Butter – cold butter is used to keep the dough together while it bakes.
  • Egg – used for structure and texture.
  • Flour – this fills out the cookies.
  • Vanilla – for flavor.
  • Baking Powder – used as a leavening agent (aka these are going to be nice and soft).

Where did you find your stamps?

I actually found the stamps a few months back at a craft store on sale for $1. Hey big spender. I’m sure you could find some very similar ones nearby or online. Here is a great Cookie Stamp Set from Amazon (less than $5!) Just wash them well before use.

Words to Stamp Onto Your Cookies

The fun part is figuring out what ridiculous sayings you want to stamp onto your heart cookies. It could be fun inside jokes with your friends or something a little more lovey-dovey for your significant other. Here are some common ones you’d find on Valentine’s hearts:

  • love
  • be mine
  • I love you
  • kiss me
  • xoxo

How to Make Heart Cookies | Directions

For full details on how to make Heart Cookies, see the recipe card down below!

Step 1: Make Dough

Preheat oven.

In a large mixer, stir butter and sugar together until blended. Stir in egg and vanilla. Scrape sides of the bowl and mix again. Slowly stir in flour and baking powder until just incorporated.

I added a little extra flour to make sure my letters kept their shape! As you can see, it’s pretty crumbly. Just work it together with your hands and it should come together nicely.

Step 2: Stamp and Freeze Dough

Roll dough out on a well-floured work surface. Cut into heart shapes and transfer to a baking sheet. Stamp phrases onto cookies and freeze for a couple of minutes. Freezing your cookie dough before transferring to the hot oven help the cookies keep their shapes and sayings!

Step 3: Bake

Immediately transfer to oven and bake. The thicker the cookie, the longer the baking time. Cool, then transfer to a cooling rack. Serve at room temperature.

Storing Heart Cookies

Stacking them all together and adding some milk makes a great little afternoon treat!

Or you can wrap some up and share with your friends. Store heart cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They will last a little longer in the fridge, though the edges will get pretty crispy.

These cookies also freeze really well! (All cookies freeze really well, as long as they’re wrapped well!) Store in airtight containers and freeze for up to 3 months. They can definitely last longer, but I’d suggest eating them within those 3 months.

I am in awe with this sugar cookie recipe, I have been trading in/out different extracts (lemon, orange blossom, almond) and the consistence of the dough is always the same just a little flavor difference. The stamp idea is fantastic, I will give it a try! Thank you for finally giving me a reason to like sugar cookies!

I love the cookies tied up with string….reminds me of the Italian bakeries we use to go to as kids where they packaged our goodies in boxes, tied with string.
