This Week at the Brennan’s This Week at the Brennan’s

Well, our week started off as any other week, with my husband leaving Sunday night and my in-laws hanging out at our apartment. Kids went to school, I got some work done, etc. etc.

Then on Tuesday, my kids had the day off school so we drove to DC to visit Gordon early because!! He officially finished and graduated his training on Wednesday morning!! It’s been a long 8 months, people. And we’re finally done! Yes, I’m so proud of Gordon and so glad he made it to the end of this training because it was hard, but hot damn, I’m so proud of myself too. Proud that I moved me and my three kids across the country by myself and lived to tell the tale. If you read through my other weekly recaps from May and June, you’ll see just how insane those weeks were to handle alone. (This one was the worst week of my life.)

So, at Gordon’s graduation, he gave a lovely speech (because he was voted in as class president (of course he was) and was required to give a speech) and was recognized with some awesome achievements he had made over the past 235 days. Yes I counted the days, why do you ask?

The biggest, most exciting thing that happened this week was probably Halloween! We were told several things from several people about trick or treating and how and where to go. So, I felt like we had options. I saw some parents changing their kids right in the school yard ready to go trick or treating right away after school. So, Brooke asked if we could go right away, so that’s what we did! We got home, had a few snacks, got dressed and headed down some of the busier streets to collect candy from local businesses, around 3:30. By 4:30, the sidewalks were pretty filled! We did take a break to eat some pizza, and then headed towards our neighborhood with the brownstones and more residential areas. Lots of decorated houses and lots of people sitting on their stoops dishing out the candy. It was so fun and everyone was so nice!

We were back home by 5:55pm and tuckered out. All my children slept well that night.

I also gave Brooke and Blake the option to either eat as much candy as they wanted or to get one piece a day in their lunches and of course, they chose to eat it all on Halloween night. They hardly put a dent into their loot before it was time for bed and once they woke up, it was gone, so no fights over the candy at all this year! Mom win for sure.

My in-law’s arrived this week because my husband is finally FINALLY finishing his training and there is a nice little graduation ceremony. Plus, we are a great excuse for them to come to New York! We have been showing them around a lot these past few days.

I think Eddie has had croup these past few days 🙁 His cough is really telling and the really sucky part is it’s all viral, so there is no medicinal cure. Just lots of fluids, humidifiers and ibuprofen. On top of it all, I noticed some teeth barely poking through his gums, so that poor boy has been pretty unhappy.

Brooke and I were invited to an event on Saturday at a kids’ cooking venue and it was so so fun! I discovered some little plastic knives that are extremely kid friendly. I totally am getting some for my kids! They cut food and not skin.

Oh heeeeeey friends! Another week gone by 🙂

Here’s what happened this week:

First off, I just want to say that my husband has nine days left of training. NINE! Single digits people!! I know it’s a big deal for him to finally be finished training, but I FREAKING MADE IT. Gordon has been mostly absent since March and I had to go through some hellish weeks alone, with the move and the selling of our house and the driving across the country with three kids by myself and all. That wasn’t fun. But, looking back, I kind of feel like a bad ass. I DID IT and I’m going to scream it from the roof tops. Nine days nine days nine days!!

This week, Brooke has been getting much much better from her cold and Blake has been getting progressively more sick, presumably from Brooke. I kept him home from school on Friday because of a fever and cough. Friday was the worst day for him and we did kept him home from soccer on Saturday too. But since then, his fever has broke and his cough only really bothers him at night. Or his immune system is amazing. Eddie is still doing ok, and I have a touch of a sore throat, but that’s where it has stayed for the past 4ish days. I’m so grateful that I haven’t gotten this virus! Big blessing for sure. (PS- all of you who told me to get Delsym 12 hour…thank you!! That stuff worked so well!)

Here’s what happened this week:

Brooke has been pretty sick this week! I mentioned last week that she was starting to take a turn with a high fever. She stayed home from school Monday to Wednesday and then was able to attend Thursday and Friday, even though she had a cough. Those coughs stick around for such a long time!! She currently takes her temperature 1000 times a day in hopes she’ll have a fever again and not have to go to school. Thankfully, she’s the only one to have gotten this really bad cold, so we’re hopeful it stays that way. Any amazing cough syrups, elixirs or magical tips and tricks? She sometimes coughs so hard she throws up 🙁 Poor little thing.

Blake had another soccer practice and game this week which he was amazing at! His team won 3 to 1…not that this soccer game filled with 3 and 4 year olds is super cutthroat or anything. Haha! He is such a runner and sweating doesn’t get him down. He’s great and kicking the ball far when he gets a clear shot at the ball, but generally, that’s never. He always walks away happy from his games and his coach is super rad. We’re all happy about it!

I continue to recipe test normal recipes and pressure cooker recipes hesitantly. Still get minor heart palpitations with that darn pressure cooker, but it’s getting better! I just have to warn my kids when I’m about to release the pressure. It’s so loud! I do have one pressure cooker recipe coming up next week, I think, for a chicken nacho dip, minus the velveeta. It’s goooooood.

My Mom came to visit this weekend! She flew in to attend a conference for her work and we got to see her every morning and evening. It was so nice to have a familiar face around 🙂 The kids love all their grandparents…especially when certain Grandma’s come in toting PEZ dispensers. She knows the way to their hearts.

Early Monday morning after I walked my two older kids to school, I took the subway over to the pediatric ENT where Eddie won the hearts of ALL. People in the waiting room, the two receptionists, the nurse, the ENT and the audiologist. ALL OF THEM were swooning over him…typical. He was a little more timid and shy than normal, but warmed up to everyone and even flirted a little with the nurse! He did such a good job through the hearing test and even kept some big headphones on for a good two minutes before he was annoyed and threw them to the ground.

So, after all was said and done, Eddie’s ears are totally fine! No real damage from the consistent ear infections, and his hearing is right where it needs to be. Onto speech therapy we go! Still only speaking one word, though babbles up a storm.

I’ve also noticed that when he is having a tantrum, its usually because I (or whoever) hasn’t taken the time to explain what is happening. For instance, Gordon left the apartment to go pick up our van from the parking garage. When he left, Eddie started screaming inconsolably. So, I picked him up and started explaining to him where daddy went. Once he heard my explanation, he was fine and went back to playing. He understands everything incredibly well, its just his speech that is delayed. So, I’m looking into the ins and outs of speech therapy.

Here’s what has happened this week:

So, I am a little less than smart and realized that Eddie’s appointment is THIS coming week. Not this past week. Dang, gina. So, tomorrow morning I take him in! Still fascinated to figure out what’s going on in that little body of his!

Speaking of Eddie’s little body…his hair!! It’s adorably out of control. I’ll be cutting it again. I really want to cut it short, but I don’t want to jinx getting rid of the curls, though it seems they are here to stay after the first trim.

My two friends left early Tuesday morning and it made me sad because I really like them and I forgot what it was like to live by close friends. *Sigh* One day I’ll have New York friends….one day.

Blake learned all about friends at preschool this week and even went to a pet store to visit some ‘animal friends’…Except I forgot about him going to the pet store and was throughly confused when he came home one day saying he wanted a guinea pig. (The best part about field trips with the school is you just walk wherever you want to go because everything is so darn close!! I love the opportunities they get!!)

Brooke and Blake are pretty convinced we are getting a kitten or a puppy once Eddie is out of diapers, but I keep telling them “Dad is allergic!!” Brooke is a little sassy though and responds quickly with a “well, Dad is hardly ever here, so what’s the big deal??”

She’s completely right on that one (but only for 5 more weeks!) and then it’ll be back to “Dad’s allergic”. By the way, the deposit for a small animal in my building is $1000. So, it’s a firm no.

Oh, mama! Another busy week in the books!

Here’s what happened this week:

Welllllllll, I started my week saying goodbye to Gordon and saying hello to two dear friends who came to visit me! I convinced them to come to NYC to help me with a few big photo and recipe shoots for a holiday e-magazine I’m putting together for you all! We were cooking, cleaning and decorating up a storm while taking as many little sight seeing breaks as possible amongst the madness.

This week was crazy, decorating for Christmas, shooting 17 (!!!) recipes, keeping three kids alive, etc.. But a big chunk of the work is done and over with and I can’t wait to put it all together so you all can have this resource in your kitchen to keep you sane during the holidays! Sanity seems to be my number one priority. Always.

This week was filled with lots of food and business, as per usual!

Here’s what happened this week:

Well, I’m working on a wee little Christmas project which involves lots of recipe testing and lots of picture taking. This week, I’ve been doing a TON of testing…meaning no gym time and lots of eating. So I’ve been picking up some poundage. GO ME! More details of this project to come in November and December 😉

Brooke had volleyball this week and is starting to enjoy it a little more! Her first week was kind of a bust because she felt unprepared, like the game of volleyball had changed once we crossed state lines and it was foreign to her. But this week was totally different! They were working on a different skill, and she got partnered with a girl coach which made all the difference (in my opinion). So, yay! She’s back to liking it again.

Blake also started Soccer this week and so far loves it. But, it’s mostly just running at this point, so we’ll see how he progresses. That boy is such a goofball and a ray of sunshine wherever he goes. I love him so so much.

I’ve noticed my eyes getting worse and worse and one of my teeth starting to hurt. So I’ve been wearing my glasses and amping up my flossing game. I know I should floss a lot more than I do, but MAMA TIRED.

Gordon came back this weekend and we really didn’t get to spend a whole lot of alone time together because of our kids sports and general attention they need. I saw a lot of him in passing. So, better luck next weekend? 7 more weeks to go until he works out of NYC!! Not that I’m counting or anything.

This past week has been great!! Back to school is HERE! Yes!

Here’s what happened this week:

My biggest news to share is Brooke and Blake started school this past week and we are so excited about it! Well, I’m probably most excited about it, then Blake, then Brooke. Haha! I’ve had my kids with me 24/7 since June 1st when we were rolling out of Idaho on our way to NYC. So yeah, this day couldn’t come fast enough for me. We all thrive off of schedules, proper bedtimes and the same daily patterns so we are thriving now that school has started.

Blake got seriously lucky by getting admission to the same school Brooke got into and his teacher is amazing! I couldn’t be happier. It is such a huge blessing to have them at the same school, not just because it makes my life so easy (I drop them off and pick them both up at the same time in the same place), but because their elementary school is considered to be a very good public school. I was really concerned that I wouldn’t be able to figure out the school system because its so different in the city, but after making lots of calls and getting our apartment, it was much easier than anticipated. So hooray!
