Our Love Story + a Giveaway!!
Do you like lovey-dovey movies? I certainly do. I’m the biggest sucker for them! They make you feel wonderful and happy, like you want to be in love with butterflies in your stomach for the rest of your life. My husband does not share this same view, probably like most men. Here’s the thing about me and movies: I put myself in the characters’ story. This is sometimes fun to do, but when I watch scary/thriller/action/pee-your-pants kinds of movies, it gets old real quick and I have nightmares. {And I hate nightmares, just for the record.} So I stick with my happy-go-lucky love stories and I like it. I’m totally that stereotypical girl who just loves love. I love love so much that I put myself into the movies I watch. It’s kind of a habit…I do it with all sorts of things too: books, movies, the news headlines. Ya know. The usual. Or not.
Anyways, in college, when I was madly in love with Gordon {but he didn’t know it yet}, I’d watch all sorts of romantic comedies and think of him and put us in the story. And, at one point I thought we wouldn’t have to come up with a storyline of our own because us getting together in the first place was kind of box-office-hit material. Any budding moviemakers out there? You know you’re just dying to make a movie about me. I can tell.
Well, here’s how it went down: My first semester in college was when we met. It was our first day and we happened to be in the same English class. Coincidence? I think not. The prof {bless his heart} decided he wanted to learn our names, so for the duration of the semester we’d have assigned seating. “Ok. Whatever!” I thought. So we all stand up and go to the edges of the room so he can go through the class list and assign person to chair. And that’s when I see him. The one. The cutest and sweetest-looking boy I had ever seen. With a great smile. And dimples. And large muscles. The room went a little fuzzy. Then I started silently praying like the wind. “Please oh please let me sit by that cute boy!” As the teacher continued down the list with neither of our rears getting assigned seats, I started getting desperate: “I’ll take kitty-corner to his desk and find an excuse to talk to him! PLEASE let me sit by him!”
Well guys, that plea worked because we sat front row center for the entire semester. BINGO. We became friends too. Or so I thought. My flirting came to a complete halt when I learned about a girlfriend. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND?” is what I never actually told him…because I was trying to play it cool and all. {I’m sure I sound really cool now…}
So, we were friends this whole semester and then lost contact. I never forgot about him and compared every boy I dated to him. And there was no Facebook yet so I couldn’t stalk him see what he was up to and stay in contact. I’m a big believer in everything happening for a reason, so I was puzzled as to why this boy made such an impact and then vanished out of my life.
However, three years later, Facebook found me, then I found Gordon and we picked up where we left off. Finally, after chatting online, we meet up for lunch on campus. I was so nervous, but once he got there, I was completely at ease. We talk and talk and talk. He drives me back to my apartment and we talk and talk some more. My roommates fall in love with him too because what girl can resist dimples and big muscles? He has to leave, but I invite him back for pie later that evening. {I needed an excuse to invite him back, so I “just so happened to be making pie for my roommate’s birthday.” Umm…little white lie.} I run out to the store to get ingredients for pie and whip out a few. He comes back and we spend the whole night talking. Literally stay up all night and just talk. Probably not the best decision considering I had two finals the next morning…oops. Around 6 am, he falls asleep on my couch and I shower and get dressed for my classes. I leave, ACE my finals and come back. How lucky was that? Gord was my good luck charm!
From then on, we just date. There was no deciding conversation saying “ok, we’re dating now.” It was very natural. Oh, and this might be a good time to mention he was no longer with that other mediocre girl! Haha. We date, things are wonderful. Then one day, he takes me back to that English classroom where we met and gives me a letter to read. I finish the very adorable, sappy love letter, only to look up and see him down on one knee. Squee!!
I think we all know what my answer was. And to think that if I had registered for the 10 am class instead of the 9 am class I would have never met him. But luckily we did meet and were meant to be together! So that was 5 years ago, and thinking about it still gives me goosebumps! Love stories never get old. Well, I share that with you today because there is a movie coming out called The Lucky One. Wanna go see it with me? It’s gonna be a good one because just watching the trailer gave me the chills! That is such a beautiful love story Lauren! I’m 21 and in a similar situation to you, before you and your husband reconnected. I met the boy I like in the first few weeks of university, we were in a lot of the same classes and I felt like we had a really strong connection – but we’ve lost touch for a few years now. I do think about when (if ever) we will be together. But thanks for sharing your very inspiring story (and your wonderful recipes)!
