Onion Ring Topped BBQ Bacon Burger

Remember when I told you this story about how I gained the freshman 15 {and then like 7 more} because in college I was introduced to Sonic? I was a sucker for their corn dogs, cherry limeades and onion rings. I was never really a big fan of onion rings before Sonic. And then I moved 0.7 miles away from the blasted drive in….and the addiction started.

Since 2004, I’ve been a bit of an onion ring freak and will always favor them over fries.

Ok, technically that’s not true. 94% of the time I’ll choose them…which in my book might as well be 100%. So, fast forward 8ish years and I’m still daydreaming about onion rings. I’m really mature.

Well, fast forward 8 years and 1 day and guess what? Alexia Foods contacted me and asked me to be a Tastemaker Ambassador. I jumped at the chance because {1} I like Alexia products and buy them a lot {2} they sell onion rings {3} I like their onion rings. I make my decisions based on the important things in life. AS ALWAYS.

So, I made this recipe for Alexia and all my fellow onion ring lovers out there. Cheers to us, my peeps! May the world never get sick of these fried onion babies!

Here’s how you make these:

Onion Rings

First thing you’re going to want to do is get some onion rings cooking. I used these panko breaded onion rings from Alexia because they get super crunchy in the oven and are done in 15 minutes. Aaaaand, they taste yummy on this burger.

Bacon

You’ll also want to get some bacon cooking too. I only used 2 slices for our 2 burgers because these are thick cut slices. Feel free to pile on the bacon as you see fit.

beef patty mixture unmixed

So while those two things are doing their thang, stir up the burger patty mixture. This is how I make 99.9% of all my burgers. I love adding onions and bbq sauce to my patties. I don’t know when or why I started making them this way, but there you have it.

beef patties

So you can form your meat mixture into two healthy sized burgers and get them into a skillet….or onto a grill. Whatevs. Just make sure you spray your cooking surface with nonstick spray.

cooked onion rings

Your onion rings should be about done now. Pull those babies out and take a big whiff. Smells good, huh? I love hate onion rings. It was at this point where I stopped taking photos/lost all attention and ate 3/4 of these off the pan….and subsequently burned my fingers and mouth. Smooth Lauren, smooth.

Anyways, I think you can figure out the rest. Take a bun, slap on some toppings, add a burger, more bbq sauce, the bacon and the onion rings and shovel this bad boy into your mouth.

Now, doesn’t that taste like heaven? Thought so.

Red Robin, you ain’t got nothin’ on me.

Just kidding. I have no idea what that means.

Anyways, make these tonight! This is one of the meals I rely on weekly because it is so darn easy and we all LOVE it….especially the onion ring part…but that was just a new addition for today because I love you all. A perfect weeknight meal for all you Moms trying to get back into the groove of back to school. Aaaaand, I knew you’d appreciate the insanity that this burger is. Here’s the printable:

Have a great Monday!

Oh man. My favorite thing at Sonic was their Bacon Burger Toaster -thingy. It had onion rings. I always thought their onion rings smelled like the fair. Mmm. And their tator tots (along with Yoplait whips) were the cravings from pregnancy #1. Love the burger, hon. 🙂

  7. Julia {The Roasted Root}

This is an all-out delicious looking burger! I love onion rings and have always enjoyed those crispy critters on my burger. PLUS bacon, PLUS pickles…you know your burgers, lady! Despite how thick the burger is, I’d make every attempt to fit the thing in my mouth…might have to squish it down a bit. 😉

  8. Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious

Sonic is the devil! There’s such awesome crap there – greasy as hell – but it’s pretty damn awesome. Anyway, this burger is awesome. I love a burger with onion rings!

Every time I eat onion rings, I think about that summer we somehow got it in our heads that they were low-fat, and we’d go to the sonic by your sisters house sometimes twice a day to eat our “health food.”. Ah . . . Those were simple times . . . .

  10. Erin @ The Spiffy Cookie

I have those very onion rings in my freezer! Now to get the rest of the ingredients after being gone for over a month…
